Load-Cell vs Potentiometer Sim Racing Pedals

Compare load-cell and potentiometer brake pedals by sensing method, pressure feel, adjustability, mounting needs, calibration and platform compatibility.

Quick answer

A load cell measures force at the brake, while a potentiometer typically measures pedal travel. The feel depends on the full pedal design and setup, so compare the sensor, adjustment range and mounting requirements rather than assuming the sensor alone determines performance.

Pedal sensor type changes what the system measures, but it does not determine the complete feel or accuracy by itself. A load cell measures force; a potentiometer generally measures pedal movement. Spring, elastomer, geometry, adjustment, calibration and mounting all affect how the brake responds.

Setup Force range and calibration matter Travel curve and calibration matter
Mounting Must resist the force applied Must hold the pedal unit securely
Upgrade check Software, base/USB connection and console path Connector, base and platform support

Before buying, check the model’s adjustment range, pedal travel, included springs/elastomers, software support and whether it connects to a wheel base or directly to PC. On console, a standalone USB connection may not work the same way it does on PC.

Mounting matters as much as the sensor. A pedal unit that moves on the floor or a flexing stand changes the input you feel. Check the rig maker’s supported pedal formats and the pedal maker’s mounting instructions.

For the sensor explanation and setup options, see load-cell pedals explained. Compare wheel stands and full cockpits if you are upgrading the mounting base too.

Common questions

What is the difference between a load-cell and potentiometer brake?

A load cell measures force applied to the pedal; a potentiometer measures movement or position. Exact designs and software options vary by model.

Do load-cell pedals need a rigid cockpit?

They need a mount that can handle the pedal force without unwanted movement. Check the pedal maker’s mounting requirements and your rig’s stiffness.

Are load-cell pedals compatible with consoles?

Compatibility depends on how the pedals connect to the wheel base and the exact platform-supported hardware. Check the manufacturer’s model list.
